The iconic Apple Factory in Brampton is closing its doors at the end of this year, to make room for housing developments.
The Apple Factory Country Grocer is a beloved roadside market known for its produce, homemade pies, pastries, seasonal events and more. Since 1979, the market has become a community stable for those in Brampton, Halton Hills and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Now, the City of Brampton has confirmed development plans are underway to turn the space into residential towers.
According to a statement from the city, the project is expected to add approximately 1,302 residential units, consisting of 1,064 residential units, 238 units of townhouses, 1,507 underground parking spaces and over 3,600 square metres of commercial retail.
“The application incorporates elements of the Apple Factory Country Grocer into the design to pay homage to the community landmark,” city officials said in a statement.
“The proposed residential development would also include designated pedestrian connections to transit services such as the Mount Pleasant GO Station and Züm Transit. The proposal also commits to allocating five per cent of the residential units for affordable housing,” they continued.
City officials said this project is part of their goal to create 113,000 new housing units by 2031, to reach Brampton’s target set by the provincial government.
The Apple Factory will remain open until Dec. 31.
