Loblaws phasing out microbeads and triclosan

Some good news to share on the body care front. Loblaws has announced it’s detoxing its household and beauty products and banning antibacterial triclosan, phthalates and scrubby plastic microbeads from its Life Brand and President’s Choice products by 2018.

Loblaw Companies president Galen Weston said microbeads in particular create a “life cycle issue for our organization.” Since the tiny plastic beads that look like fish eggs get eaten by fish in the food chain, “in an odd twist, our beauty products may ultimately impact our commitment to sustainable seafood,” he said.

Loblaws recruited Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie, authors of Slow Death By Rubber Duck, to advise the company on which toxins to target. The three ingredients are the first it is phasing out in a broader reformulation process.
