This year’s Just for Laughs Toronto festival will not be taking place due to monetary constraints, the company says.
Last week, Groupe Juste pour rire inc (JPR) released a statement confirming that both its Montreal and Toronto festivals had been cancelled for 2024 and that the organization would undergo financial restructuring.
“JPR’s board of directors, after having extensively considered all available alternatives, came to the conclusion that the financial situation of the organization left no other choice than to initiate formal restructuring proceedings,” the statement said.
Despite the cancellation of its headline festivals, JPR said it plans to continue its operations in a “scaled-down” format, with hopes of returning to regular programming in 2025.
The company attributed its suboptimal financial standing to significant changes in the landscape of the business, saying the past few years had brought “many challenges,” including the global pandemic, inflationary times, and reduced budgets.
JPR has been running festivals for 40 years and said it intends to continue its decades-long legacy far into the future.
