The Toronto Tempo is picking up momentum by adding Canadian YouTuber and media personality Lilly Singh to its ownership group, and the internet is applauding the move.
On Tuesday, the WNBA team announced she will be joining as a co-owner, along with 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, technology leader Sukindher Singh Cassidy and Larry Tanenbaum, and the chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures.
“I love women. I love Toronto. Joining the ownership group of the Tempo is an absolute no-brainer. I can’t think of anything else I would rather spend my money, time and hype-woman energy on,” Singh said.
Apart from her role as an owner, she will be assuming the role of the team’s chief hype officer, where she’ll be tasked with “building and amplifying excitement for the Tempo on and off the court–including cultivating the fan community, curating in-game rituals, and celebrating the sport of women’s basketball,” the team said.

Tempo President Teresa Resch is expressing excitement about Singh joining the team, making note of the entertainer’s long-standing vocal support for the WNBA in Toronto.
“Lilly is a creative visionary with infectious energy and enthusiasm. Her expertise in online community-building and socially driven storytelling, not to mention her deep passion for this game, this league and this city, will be absolutely invaluable,” Resch said.
Singh is no stranger to women’s sports and working alongside Williams, making her mark as co-owner and founder of Angel City FC, one of the National Women’s Soccer Leagues.
“I know from experience that in every corner of the world, one thing always rings true: the positive impact that participating in sports and the sports community has on girls and women.”
