Legendary tennis pro athlete Serena Williams will be a new owner of Canada’s first WNBA team, Toronto Tempo.
Williams will join the Tempo’s ownership group with Larry Tanenbaum, Chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures.
“I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,” Serena Williams said in a press release on Monday.
“This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes — I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity,” Williams continued.
In an Instagram post of Williams sporting a Tempo sweater, she wrote “being an owner is about fueling something bigger than myself.”
“I’ve spent my whole life pushing limits on the court, and now I get to do that off the court, for this incredible organization, and the incredible athletes that will be part of the team,” Williams said.
Teresa Resch, president of the Toronto Tempo, describes Williams as a “champion” and “the greatest athlete of all time.”
“Her impact on this team and this country is going to be incredible. She’s set the bar for women in sport, business and the world – and her commitment to using that success to create opportunities for other women is inspiring – we’re thrilled to be marking the lead-up to International Women’s Day with this announcement,” Resch said in the press release.
Williams will be instrumental in bringing the Tempo’s visual identity to life, and will actively contribute to future jersey designs and exclusive merchandise, according to the release.
Basketball fans and Canadians are excited about Williams’ ownership role.
“For sure it will be great. With all the hype from the last WNBA season, I kind of honestly wanted to go to a game but Toronto didn’t have a team but that’s pretty dope,” Felipe Palomo told Now Toronto.
“That’s a game-changing move! Serena brings the same championship mentality to the business side as she did on the court. Big win for the Toronto Tempo,” a user on X said.
“Serena Williams’ influence expands! Exciting new chapter ahead,” another user commented.
“This is actually insane! The GOAT investing in the W is everything that’s right in this world,” a user on Instagram shared.
“Didn’t see this coming … but love it!!” one user expressed.
The Toronto Tempo will start playing at the new Coca-Cola Coliseum in 2026, and will also be hosting regular-season games in Vancouver and Montreal.
