Toronto drivers, beware, traffic this weekend is poised to be particularly intense, with the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) completely closed for repairs and TTC closures adding insult to injury.
Driving in our city is never really a treat, but avoiding driving this weekend may be your best option with the DVP seeing major repairs leading to a closure of the entire parkway, stretching from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp on the Gardiner Expressway. Officials note that completing the work during a single full closure on each expressway will help avoid repeated overnight lane restrictions.
The TTC has closures happening at the same time, with signal work leaving Line 2 closed from Jane station to Kipling station starting Friday at 11 p.m. until 8 a.m. on Sunday, with shuttle buses to keep people moving.
City officials are urging people to consider taking transit when and where possible; meanwhile, cycling or walking may be your best bet if you can. But if you must drive, you should know that the City developed a traffic management plan for the closures.
The plan includes deploying traffic agents, monitoring traffic conditions in real time and adjusting signal timings along alternate routes as needed. Electronic message boards will also be used to alert drivers ahead of the closures, while short-term utility work along major detour routes will be restricted to keep traffic moving.
The City is also coordinating with major event venues to share travel information with ticket holders in advance and working with mapping apps to ensure motorists receive updated closure and detour information. Drivers are being encouraged to plan ahead, allow for extra travel time, consider alternate routes and use public transit where possible.
A good time for repairs?
The closures and repairs are timely, coming ahead of several events set to see millions of additional people descend upon the city: the FIFA World Cup and Pride Month.
Additional closures happening throughout the city include the Gardiner Expressway’s British Columbia Rd. Lake Shore Blvd. on-ramp which will be closed off from: 10 p.m. on Sunday until approximately 10 p.m. on Tuesday, while Elizabeth St. is closed from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday from Gerrard St. W. to Elm St.
Meanwhile, Market St. will be closed from Front St. W. to The Esplanade starting Sunday, May 10, until Saturday, January 9, 2027,
A busy weekend in the city
Despite the closures, lots of people will be moving around Toronto, with events, including a match between Toronto FC and Inter Miami on Saturday, and the Sporting Life 10K on Sunday morning.
