Move over Twitter because there’s about to be a new app in town.
Meta, Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, is set to launch a new app called Threads that will rival social media company Twitter.
Threads is scheduled to be released on Thursday, according to a listing on Apple’s App Store. The new platform is described as a text-based conversation app where “communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow.”
Based on photos outlined by the app store, Threads appears to be Twitter’s doppelganger, given its layout mimics the look and style of the social media platform. Instagram users can keep their username and follow the same accounts they do on the app.
On Monday, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey tweeted “All your Threads are belong to us” referring to the personal information that will be collected by Meta’s new app. In response, Twitter’s Executive Chair Elon Musk replied “yeah” to the tweet.
This development in social media platforms comes as Musk recently made new restrictions on the number of tweets users can view daily, which left multitudes of users frustrated.
In a tweet on July 1, the Tesla CEO announced that temporary limits have been applied to address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation. Verified accounts are limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, unverified accounts to 600 posts per day and new unverified accounts to 300 per day.
Recently, Twitter also unveiled a requirement that demands users to be verified in order to access its online dashboard TweetDeck.
