What to know
- The Toronto Raptors have signed seven-foot centre Mo Bamba to a one-year, non-guaranteed deal.
- Fans are excited about Bamba’s size, shooting ability, and shot-blocking potential, especially after his recent strong performance against Raptors 905.
- The 27-year-old brings NBA experience from multiple teams and will get an immediate opportunity to prove himself as Toronto faces the Orlando Magic at home.
Toronto Raptors fans are thrilled with the Raptors’ latest acquisition: Mohamed Fakaba Bamba, AKA Mo Bamba.
The seven-foot-tall centre is signing a one-year deal with the Raptors, but it won’t be guaranteed until Jan. 10, 2026, according to Sportsnet’s reporter Michael Grange. This means he’s basically entering a two-week trial period with the team. ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania was the first to report Bamba signing with the team.
The Raptors are pulling Bamba from the NBA development league, also known as the G League, after playing for the Salt Lake City Stars for the first part of the season. Bamba recently helped the Stars secure a win over the Raptors 905 during the league’s Winter Showcase.
In addition to his notoriety on the court, the Ivorian-American baller is the namesake of the popular 2018 song by Sheck Wes.
“This song is about to skyrocket in plays north of the border,” one fan shared on Reddit.
Playing for the Texas Longhorns during his college career, and several NBA teams including the Orlando Magic, the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the New Orleans Pelicans, the 27-year-old is highly regarded for both his shooting skills and 7’ 10” wingspan.
Many fans are excited by what this could mean for the Toronto team.
“The fabled Mo Bamba acquisition actually happened!” one fan shared on Reddit. “I feel like it’s been talked about since at least 2018.”
“He played well against the 905 recently. He obviously impressed them enough to give him a go. Why not?”
“YEEEES! I’ve been calling for this for years, ever since his value cratered and the Raptors have been devoid of height and shooting at center.”
And some had no idea he wasn’t already signed to an NBA team.
“I thought he was an interesting prospect earlier in his career. He can shoot the 3 and is a decent shot blocker. Had no idea he was just floating in the G league waiting to be signed.”
“I am indebted to the Raptors for signing him. Too talented for the G league.”
The Raptors will take on the Orlando Magic tonight at home, with tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
