The federal government has recalled numerous energy drinks over caffeine content concerns and labelling issues.

A total of 45 drinks were recalled, including recognizable brands such as Monster, Celsius, Prime, and Red Bull.

“The affected products are being recalled from the marketplace due to various non-compliances related to caffeine content and labelling requirements,” according to a federal news release issued on Thursday.

The government is advising consumers who think they may have become unwell after consuming a recalled product to contact their healthcare provider and to dispose of or return any recalled product to the location they were purchased from.

Those who shop online should also be aware that not all foreign products meet Canadian safety standards.

Caffeinated energy drinks and mixes that meet Canada’s food safety standards contain a maximum caffeine level of 180mg in a single-serving, provide a unilingual label written in English and French and a required cautionary statement.

The federal government also discouraged excessive caffeine intake.

“High levels of caffeine may have adverse health effects for children, pregnant individuals, breastfeeding individuals, and those sensitive to caffeine. Exercising while consuming caffeine may lead to adverse health effects. Some of the side effects of consuming excess caffeine may include insomnia, irritability, headaches, and nervousness,” the statement warned.
