Pierre Poilievre is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to suspend the federal fuel tax amid rising gas prices due to the United States-Iran war.

In a letter posted on X, the Official Opposition Leader urged Carney to use $5 billion of the $9 billion in additional gas revenue to remove “all federal taxes on gas and diesel” until the end of 2026 to help Canadians save money at the pump.

“As gas prices surge, families are paying more every time they fill up to get to work, take their kids to hockey or keep their business on the road. But the rising oil prices have been a massive windfall for your government,” Poilievre wrote.

“With oil trading roughly $45 to $50 higher than the pre-war baseline, your government stands to collect close to $9 or $10 billion in additional annual revenue if these prices are sustained.”

Moreover, he also recommends Carney suspend the GST on gas and diesel and “permanently eliminate the so-called clean fuel standard tax and industrial carbon tax.”

Poilievre says suspending these three taxes would save the average Canadian about 25 cents a litre on gas and 21 cents a litre on diesel, equaling to “roughly $20 every time a parent fills up a minivan.”

By the end of 2026, he says a family of four can save more than $1,200.
