Political silly season takes hold at city hall

Rating: NNNNN

Tantalizing tidbits from the municipal election file.

First there’s councillor Michael Walker, he of the “stake in Mayor Mel Lastman’s side” fame. Just to confuse voters, it seems someone named David Walker has registered to run in the other Walker’s uptown ward. Could the mayor’s minions be putting him up to it?

Well, there is a Tory connection. Walker, David, is head of the party’s St. Paul’s riding association.

Across town, Pam McConnell has only had to fend off arch-lefty Wendy Forrest. Now, though, she’s got a righty to worry about in Jennifer Daly. Daly, a former assistant to Derwyn Shea, a one-time Tory backbencher, is said to have a few friends at Queen’s Park.

Speaking of the Pink Palace, it could be that Norm Gardner, who’s announced that he’s retiring from politics, may be able to stay on as chair of the police services board after all.

The fix was supposed to be in for Al Leach to replace him, but it seems Normie’s friends — namely the mayor and police union boss Craig Bromell — went crying to the province on his behalf. All Norm has to do is be a good boy and keep his mouth shut.
