The Scarborough Southwest byelection is one of three provincial byelections taking place in Ontario this week. Advance voting is also underway in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek and York-Simcoe.
The Scarborough Southwest race was triggered by the resignation of former NDP MPP Doly Begum. Begum stepped down from the Ontario legislature after winning the federal election in the riding, succeeding former Liberal MP Bill Blair.
Blair resigned his seat in the House of Commons after being appointed Canada’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom. Begum sought the federal Liberal nomination and won the riding in the federal election.
The provincial byelection will determine who represents Scarborough Southwest at Queen’s Park.
For voters who cannot make it to an advance polling location, election day is set for Sept. 3. Polls will open at 9 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.
With voting now underway, candidates and their campaigns have just over a week left to make their final pitch to voters before election day.
