Meet your ’90s heroes at Fan Expo 2015

Fan Expo Canada, the annual genre convention celebrating all that’s good in comics, horror, sci-fi, anime and gaming, invades the Metro Toronto Convention Centre Labour Day weekend (Sept. 3 to 6). And this year, they’re bringing some of your favourite stars of the ’90s with them.

We run down this year’s must-see icons from the last decade of the 20th century.

Do you like scary movies? If you do, the Scream movies’ Neve Campbell is iconic. Her strong portrayal of Sidney Prescott, the surviving hero of Ghostface’s rampage, proved slasher films don’t need to take themselves too seriously and solidified Scream as one of the last great horror franchises of all time. She also taught us that everybody wants to live how they want to live as she struggled to keep the Salinger clan together on Party of Five. If only the cost of her autograph was closer to free. Appearing Fri. – Sun. Autograph: $80 Photo-Op: $85

No one rocked a pantsuit quite like Gillian Anderson did as Agent Dana Scully on The X-Files, but more recently you know her as the blonde Bedelia Du Maurier, Hannibal’s psychiatrist and part-time lover, in the critically-acclaimed Hannibal TV series. Her stunning beauty and husky rasp harkens back to the femme fatales of hardboiled noir, but her characters never need to wait for a detective in an office. With Hannibal coming to an end this summer, fans will be counting down the days until she puts on the pantsuit again and reunites with David Duchovny for Fox’s six-episode revival of The X-Files, premiering January 24, 2016. Appearing Sunday only Autograph: $70 Photo-Op: $80

Initially dismissed by Trekkies for being all sizzle and no substance, Jeri Ryan’s performance as the liberated Borg Seven of Nine is now credited with saving Star Trek Voyager from the brink of cancellation in its fourth season. Meant as a foil for Captain Janeway similar to Captain Kirk’s Spock, what seemed like a ploy to boost ratings eventually became one of the most intriguing characters in the series. Star Trek Voyager celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2015, and Toronto is the next stop on the reunion tour. Unfortunately, while Ethan Philips (Neelix) and Jeffrey Combs (The Reanimator) will join Ryan at Fan Expo, the USS Voyager will be missing its leader on the bridge. Kate Mulgrew (Capt. Kathryn Janeway) had to cancel. Jeri Ryan appears Sat. – Sun. Autograph: $60 Photo-Op: $65

Through the ’90s Danny Trejo was largely known as That guy in that thing. His weathered face and handlebar moustache were everywhere, from classic films like Con Air and Heat to TV shows of the era like Baywatch and Walker, Texas Ranger. It wasn’t until his collaborations with director Robert Rodriguez on Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn that this former San Quentin prisoner would later have a shot at leading his own action franchise. Sharpen your knives and arm your gatling gun because the hero from south of the border is finally coming north. Appearing Sat. Sun. Autograph: $60 Photo Op: $65

Okay, so calling him a hero is a stretch, but it would be absolutely ludicrous to be the only mere mortal to miss Mike Tyson at Fan Expo this year. His glory days as the knockout king of the late 80s and early 90s are over, but the former World Heavyweight Champion seems to finally have put his legal and financial trouble behind him (although we will never forget the ear bite. Sorry). He has avoided the ten-count and mounted a comeback as an actor, a writer and a kinder, gentler version of himself. Time to find out if a man with a face tattoo really can have a heart of gold. Appearing Sat. – Sun. Autograph: $100 Photo-Op: $100
