The City of Toronto is shutting down an intersection in Toronto’s Church-Wellesley Village in an attempt to repair a sinkhole for the second time within a month.
In an alarming image posted to Reddit, the pavement can be seen opening up at the intersection of Church and Wellesley streets, located in the heart of the village.
The image shows a trash bag placed on top of the hole in what appears to be an attempt to prevent vehicles from driving into it.
Reddit users were quick to point out that a sinkhole had already been repaired in the exact same spot just weeks earlier.
In a statement to Now Toronto on Tuesday, the City of Toronto says it’s aware of the sinkhole forming once again.
“Crews are currently onsite to investigate the cause of the watermain break and conduct the repairs required,” the statement said.
However, the city didn’t acknowledge why the sinkhole returned only a month after repairing it the first time.
The city says the intersection will be shut down as of 6 p.m. today for emergency repairs, with police onsite to direct traffic.
Last month, the large sinkhole also disrupted traffic and caused delays on the TTC. Some social media users say the situation repeating itself comes as no surprise.
“That neighbourhood is prone to actually huge sinkholes, someone is gonna end up swallowed in one sooner or later,” one Reddit user said.
Another user went on to say it, “looks like the fix wasn’t sufficient enough or another section broke.”
While other users say the weather is partially to blame.
“I guess the patch job is giving out with it warming up and there being tons of water (snow) everywhere,” one user explained.
Residents are encouraged to call 311 to report watermain breaks as colder temperatures are approaching in the coming days, the city says.
An estimated completion date for the repairs remains unclear, according to the city.
