Students returning to class next week may notice shorter waits, restored express service and a few new routes as the TTC rolls out its fall schedule.
Beginning Sunday, Sept. 6, the transit agency is adjusting service across 30 bus and streetcar routes to accommodate the post-summer increase in ridership and improve connections to secondary schools and post-secondary campuses.
While several changes mean more service, construction around Warden and Pape stations and along St. Clair Ave. West could also affect some familiar trips.
Here’s what students need to know before commuting back to class.
More service for students heading to campus
Some of the most noticeable improvements will be on routes serving the University of Toronto Scarborough, Centennial College and Humber College.
Service and schedule updates are coming to the 38B Highland Creek and 938 Highland Creek Express, which connect riders to the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. Changes are also being made to the 102A Markham Road and 903A Kennedy Station-Scarborough Express, with the latter providing service to Centennial College.
Over in Etobicoke, weekday school trips on the 927A Highway 27 Express between Kipling Station and Humber College will return. The 944 Kipling South Express, which serves Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus, will also be restored during all weekday service periods.
Students travelling to Humber College’s north campus will see more 906 Airport-Humber College Express service. Late-evening weekday trips will return, along with additional service during several periods on Saturdays and Sundays.
The TTC says updated schedules will be posted on its routes and schedules page by Sept. 6.
Line 6 trains will run more frequently
Students and other riders travelling along the Finch West corridor can expect improvements throughout the week.
The TTC says Line 6 Finch West will offer more frequent service, improved travel times and better reliability seven days a week. However, the agency has not provided the exact new frequency.
Additional trips will also be added during select periods on several busy routes, including the 25 Don Mills, 37 Islington, 42 Cummer, 45 Kipling, 53 Steeles East, 63 Ossington, 96 Wilson, 122 Graydon Hall, 165 Weston Rd. North, 925 Don Mills Express, 935 Jane Express and 996 Wilson Express.
Three new Etobicoke routes are launching
The September changes will also introduce three new bus routes in Etobicoke.
The new 145 Belfield will replace the weekday 45B Kipling service, operating between Kipling Station and Viscount Station on the Pearson Airport Terminal Link train. Meanwhile, service on the 45A Kipling will increase to maintain 10-minute service along the Kipling corridor.
Two new overnight options are also being added. The 345 Kipling Blue Night bus will travel between Long Branch Loop and Steeles Avenue West at Kipling Avenue, while the 373 Royal York will run between Royal York Station and the same Steeles and Kipling area.
Boarding locations are changing at Warden and Pape stations
Students travelling through Warden Station should double-check where their bus is stopping.
The temporary bus terminal is closing as accessibility construction continues, meaning affected buses will use on-street stops along Warden Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East.
Routes affected include the 8 Broadview, 9 Bellamy, 16 McCowan, 17 Birchmount, 68 Warden, 69 Warden South, 102 Markham Road, 117 Birchmount South, 135 Gerrard, 902 Markham Road Express and 968 Warden Express.
There are also changes around Pape Station as Ontario Line construction continues. The 8 Broadview and 62 Mortimer will return to Broadview Station and will no longer serve Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital.
Southbound 72 Pape buses will once again enter the partially reopened Pape Station terminal, while northbound buses will continue stopping outside the station on Lipton Avenue. The 100 Flemingdon Park will also travel to Pape Station using Pape Avenue instead of Broadview Avenue and O’Connor Drive.
Spadina streetcars will run less frequently
One change students may want to plan around is reduced weekday service on the 510 Spadina.
During the morning rush, midday, afternoon rush and early evening, streetcars will arrive every 12 minutes between Spadina and Union stations. Service between Spadina Station and Queens Quay will operate every six minutes.
