Teens across the province can now hitch a ride with Uber.
The ride-sharing platform launched the service in Ontario and Nova Scotia as of today.
The teen accounts allow minors between 13 and 17 years old to have the freedom to request their own rides that parents and caregivers can monitor. Every time a ride is requested by a teen, the adult on file will be notified and can receive real-time updates, allowing them to follow along from pickup to drop off.
Drivers will be notified that their passenger is a teen before they are picked up, and can opt out of picking up minors at any time. Teen trips are also destination locked, meaning that drivers can’t change the destination of the trip and only riders can.
Uber says teens will always be matched with highly-rated and experienced drivers, according to its website. The platform also notes that all Uber drivers undergo a thorough background check and are rescreened every year.
Additional safety features that teens can use include audio recording, live trip tracking, and PIN verification.
Teen Uber accounts will only be available for Uber rides, not Uber Eats.
To create a teen account, members must select on their app: Account, Family (to create a family profile), Invite Family, Teen, and Choose contact. After that, their teen will receive an invite through SMS and will need to complete a mandatory safety onboarding before they can start taking rides.
