Young Canadians are more likely to consider paying more for food that is organic or free of genetically modified organisms (GMO), a new study says.

According to Research Co., young Canadians aged 18 to 34 are willing to pay top dollar for cleaner food options over other age groups.

Forty-one per cent of 1,000 Canadians surveyed say they would not pay more for foods produced without the chemical fertilizers and artificial agents.

The proportion of those who wouldn’t pay more for organic foods increases to 57 per cent for those aged 55 and over, the study says. However, the percentage of those who wouldn’t pay more for organic food drops for those aged 35 to 54 to 41 per cent and to 23 per cent among those aged 18 to 34.

Twenty-two per cent of those aged 18 to 34 are unwilling to pay more for foods without GMO and 31 per cent among those aged 35 to 54 were also unwilling to pay more.

For those 55 and over, 38 per cent would not pay more money for foods that are not genetically modified.

Thirty-three per cent of Canadians say they frequently check food labels on the items they purchase to know the country or province of origin.

Twenty-four per cent check to see if products are organic and 23 per cent check to determine whether foods are non-GMO.

This online study’s results were conducted from May 4 to 6, among 1,000 adults in Canada. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
