A free, immersive ocean adventure is coming to Toronto for World Ocean Day on Thursday.

Non-profit conservation organization Ocean Wise recently launched its Sea Dome 2023 summer tour, bringing its mobile dome to communities, schools and camps across Manitoba and Ontario.

The team will be celebrating World Ocean Day on June 8 with a free, public event at the Toronto Reference Library (Bram and Bluma Appel Salon).

The planetarium-style six-metre dome projects 360-degree 4K cinematic footage of the ocean and its creatures. Marine educators will be on hand to teach attendees about ocean conservation, climate change, and fascinating marine animals by giving Sea Dome tours, while also displaying marine artifacts and providing hands-on interactive activities.

“By visiting communities throughout Canada, Ocean Wise aims to create a lasting connection to our ocean to encourage passion and care for the environment. Look out for the Ocean Wise Sea Dome in your community this summer!” Mercedes Bosch Toca, Ocean Wise mobile program manager, said in a statement.

Over the summer, the sea dome will stop in various other cities, including Winnipeg, Sault Ste. Marie, Ottawa, and Thunder Bay.

During last year’s inaugural tour through Western Canada, the dome spent 16 weeks on the road, visiting 17 communities and reaching 6,000-plus campers and students.

World Ocean Day coincides with Ocean Week in Canada from June 2-11. This week, there is a nationwide festival of events lined up promoting ocean connection and conservation. The festival is part of the country’s commitment to ensure Canada protects 30 per cent of its ocean area by 2030.
