at a time when the toronto artscene is dissolving into party central, it’s refreshing to find an emerging artist who at least claims that his overwhelming aesthetic concerns are driven by passionate theoretical issues, not some nifty networking.Intrigued by Silicon Valley research into lava lamps as models of truly random computing, Toronto-born artist and lawyer Scott Lyall makes his local solo debut at Susan Hobbs Gallery (he’s been showing regularly in New York City and L.A.) with a series of digital drawings made using a homemade “lavarand.” With their stylized calligraphic doodles and maple leaf imagery, they read something like an anime version of Margaret Atwood’s Survival.
Not exactly heavyweight, but certainly thought-provoking.DH
