At a time when resources for artists are becoming slim, a new centre dedicated to supporting creatives has opened in the city.

B Street is an affordable new arts and culture hub funded by the Government of Canada’s Community Services Recovery Fund.

Located at 1100 Bathurst Street, B Street opened on Nov. 6 and includes amenities like professional rehearsal spaces, an audio recording studio, a self-tape space, an open concept office space, storage space, and meeting rooms.

B Street is a collaboration between The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) and B Street Collaborative. The hub is also TAPA’s new home. The alliance is a not-for-profit arts service organization representing 107 professional theatre, dance and opera companies, and occupies the main floor of 1100 Bathurst.

Meanwhile, B Street Collaborative is an incubator and advocacy group working to give artists in Toronto the resources and inspiration needed to create impactful work. The organization works to empower artists to create their most impactful work, while eliminating barriers that many artists face. Additionally, B Street Collaborative looks to elevate voices that have been left out in the creative community. The new space aims to support Toronto artists as they recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our hope is that B Street will become a creative home base for this community and have a positive and lasting impact on Toronto Performing artists for years to come,” Dylan Trowbridge, resident director of B Street Collaborative, told Now Toronto in a statement.

“B Street Collaborative supports artists by exploring innovative ways of connecting the public,

private and arts sectors. We’re thrilled to welcome TAPA and Toronto’s creative community to B

Street,” Heather Jessiman, Founder of B Street Collaborative, said in a statement.

“I look forward to seeing the impactful work that we know the artists will create.”

“TAPA is excited to announce its partnership with B Street, aimed at supporting our arts sector which is slowly recovering from the pandemic,” TAPA Executive Director Jacoba Knaapen said in a statement.

Knaapen says the new space will provide TAPA members and the community with tangible resources as they reimagine their futures in an evolving new reality.

“With B Street’s help, TAPA will be able to significantly enhance our operations, expand existing programs and services, and engage with the sector-wide resource tools and accessibility that include drop-in access for the whole community,” Knaapen continued, adding that actors, performers, and musicians all have the opportunity to benefit from resources like rehearsal space, recording studios, and more.

On Instagram, TAPA shared that spaces at B Street will be available to rent at the end of this month.
