Saskatchewan got a shout-out in a new song by queer icon and “Good Luck Babe” singer Chappell Roan, and now local officials are calling for the star to visit the prairie province.

In her new song “The Subway,” Roan sings, “I made a promise, if in four months this feeling ain’t gone, well f**k this city, I’m movin’ to Saskatchewan.”

The single was released on July 31, accompanied by a music video that was shot on New York’s streets and subway system.

Ahead of the release, Nathaniel Teed, Saskatchewan’s Shadow Minister for 2SLGBTQ+ Affairs, wrote a letter to the singer, saying he would love to work with her on an act of joyful queer resistance in Saskatchewan.

“I’m reaching out on behalf of the Official Opposition in Saskatchewan, Canada – the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party – A party that has long fought for the rights of working people, the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and marginalized groups across our province,” Teed wrote in an open letter posted on social media.

In the letter, Teed, who is the province’s first openly gay MLA, said that it has historically been a haven for queer people, but acknowledged that this has changed.

“This province once set the standard for compassion and collective care, but in recent years, far-right forces with Trump-style politics have gained control,” Teed wrote.

“In a time when Saskatchewan’s conservative government is using its legislative power to actively harm queer and trans youth, most notably through the passage of Bill 137 – discriminatory legislation aimed at erasing trans identities in schools and removing third-party sex education – our queer and trans communities need to feel seen, heard and celebrated.”

Teed says that the lyrics in the new song sparked unexpected joy and a sense of real connection, and he would love to turn that into something tangible.

“Our vision is a collaboration with Chappell that offers an unapologetic middle finger to bigotry and signals to queer and trans people across the province – especially youth – that they are not alone!”

In a video posted on Instagram, alongside the leader of the Saskatchewan NDP, Carla Beck, Teed speaks directly to Roan, sharing how excited they are about the new track.

“Your shout out of Saskatchewan means more than you can know,” Teed says in the video.

The pair invited Roan to the province, saying that on her next tour, they would love to host the Midwest Princess.

Online, many fans of the singer shared their delight at Teed’s message.

“Yes!!! Please!!! Prairie Queers would need it!!! Can I sneak over from AB? Lord knows we need it too,” one person said on X.

“This rules! Thank you, Nathaniel, for your work on this and all you do!” another person commented.

“Let’s make this happen! This is the kind of inclusive performer we should be welcoming to Canada. A message of love and acceptance for all.”
