Only a year ago, gastronomes turned up their noses when Summerlicious rolled around. Why would anyone want to eat assembly-line grub served by rushed-off-their feet-staff when you could get far better fare in more convivial surroundings at the same places for only 10 bucks more at any other time of the year?

Funny what an economic downturn can do. Running July 3 to 18, this year’s Summerlicious prix fixe food fest – the seventh annual- has even more participating restos than ever, including first-time big-ticket boîtes like Didier Leroy’s eponymous uptown supper club, TV chef Roger Mooking’s Kultura on King, and Susur Lee’s rebranded Madeline’s. At this rate, it won’t be long before Summerlicious runs year-round.
