When you hear the term “ghosting” you might attribute it to behaviours seen in the dating world, but did you know that people ghost in the workforce too?

A survey conducted by Indeed found that 77 per cent of Canadians have ghosted between one and four employers in the last 12 months.

The poll suggests that employees getting cold feet is a growing trend that’s rubbed companies the wrong way.

In fact, 84 per cent say they believe it’s wrong for job seekers to ghost

businesses. And 79 per cent of employers in Canada say they keep records of job seekers who do this, and won’t consider them for future jobs.

This phenomenon is no doubt bad for business, so what are hiring managers doing about it?

According to the data, 51 per cent of employers surveyed in Canada say they have strategies in place to keep candidates engaged during the hiring process so they are more likely to stick around.

This includes offering a higher salary (44 per cent) and better benefits (35 per cent).

“Canadian employers have an opportunity to better attract and engage potential employees, and job seekers have identified more transparency, communication, and feedback as some of the key ways to help improve the process,” the survey read.
