The year is almost over, and as such, YouTube has released its annual “A Year on YouTube” report, breaking down the top songs, creators, and moments that had Canadians in a chokehold this year.

Ever wonder who the top YouTubers in Canada are? YouTube revealed that self-taught contortionist  Anna McNulty holds the top spot. She’s followed by gamer Corey Tonge, gourmet chef Iron Chef Dad, viral comedian Kallmekris, and parkour superstar Matt Larose.

Tonge secured the top spot on YouTube’s list of Canadian breakout creators. Meanwhile, in second place is Iron Chef Dad, followed by Dori Roblox.

YouTube shared that Tonge celebrated amassing a whopping 10 million subscribers earlier this year, with more than 80 per cent of his following subscribing in 2023.

“It’s only been essentially two years that I’ve been making videos for YouTube and it’s been a wild ride,” Tonge told Now Toronto in an interview.

The Toronto-based creator explained that he used to work in marketing for a sports supplement brand, where he worked hand-in-hand with YouTube creators.

“That’s actually why I became a creator because I saw how they could do anything all the time, as long as it’s part of their niche.”

“To me, the biggest thing has been meeting all the younger audiences,” Tonge explained, adding that the majority of his audience is between eight and 14 years old.

“[Also] meeting the parents who are inspired to teach their kids to become YouTubers after watching me and other YouTubers.”

He explained that at 32, becoming a YouTuber was not a career path when he was younger, so it’s mind-boggling meeting kids who are looking to follow in his footsteps.

“YouTube now has unlocked a whole different way of telling people’s stories online.”

He shared that he has two major pieces of advice for people looking to become YouTubers. The first is that you do not need much equipment to create good content.

“I’ve been just using my iPhone or Samsung for literally a year and a half,” he shared, adding that he only recently purchased his first high-end camera.

“You don’t have to go buy ten thousand dollar cameras, or the best equipment in the world. Just start by creating something small with your phone.”

The second thing? Keep on learning.

“There is always a way of doing something either better or more efficient[ly] that will help you out in the long run.”
