The Departure

THE DEPARTURE (Lana Wilson, U.S.). 86 minutes. Rating: NNNN

After Tiller co-director Lana Wilson returns with a very different project, a portrait of Ittetsu Nemoto, a Japanese punk rocker turned Buddhist monk.

Nemoto spends his days counselling the suicidal, trying to lead them out of their personal darkness and toward spiritual balance. But there’s a cost: he’s not in the best of health, and the stress of his work is putting him at risk.

The Departure tells his story with the same serenity he projects, cultivating a tone of calm and stability and slowly teasing out the details of his past and present lives. The more we discover, the more intriguing this man becomes we want to see where his journey takes him, even as we understand that path may be shorter than he – or we – would prefer.
