What to watch on Disney+ Canada in March 2022

A still from Domee Shi's Turning Red.

Our picks for the best new movies and TV shows coming to Disney+ Canada in March 2022.

Turning Red

Three years after winning an Oscar for her charming CG short Bao, Pixar animator Domee Shi delivers her first feature: a comedy about Toronto teen Mei Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang) whose version of puberty has her turning into a giant red panda whenever she gets too excited – a secret she has to keep from her overattentive mom (Sandra Oh) and, you know, the rest of the world. Featuring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as one of Mei’s pals, and boy-band songs written by Billie Eilish and FINNEAS, this looks to be one of the brighter spots in a dreary March. March 11

West Side Story

Those of you who missed Steven Spielberg’s magnificent reinvention of Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein’s musical in its theatrical run – and that’s most of you, we saw the box-office numbers – can now catch up at home, in 4K and Dolby Atmos. It won’t be quite as dazzling an experience, but Tony Kushner’s clever adjustments to the material’s themes and structure, Justin Peck’s splendid choreography and the revelatory turns from Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose (whose best supporting actress nod is one of the film’s seven Oscar nominations) should still land. And if none of that draws you in, there’s always Rita Moreno, electrifying and heartbreaking as ever in a new role created expressly for her. March 2

The Dropout

Based on the ABC Audio podcast, this Hulu series dramatizes the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes, the turtleneck-wearing, voice-lowering CEO of Theranos, the biotech start-up that aimed to revolutionize blood testing… and collapsed spectacularly when it failed to deliver on any of its promises. Amanda Seyfried plays Holmes, with Naveen Andrews as her personal and professional partner Sunny Balwani; the all-star cast includes everyone from William H. Macy and Laurie Metcalf to Stephen Fry and Michaela Watkins. Michael Showalter – whose 2021 biopic The Eyes Of Tammy Faye is also coming to Disney+ this month – directs four episodes. Thursdays from March 3

How I Met Your Father

Kids, remember how much you enjoyed How I Met Your Mother back in the early 2000s, before the show overstayed its welcome and ultimately fell flat with a finale that no longer suited the characters we’d come to know and love? Well, here’s a gender-swapped reboot starring Hillary Duff as the younger, less wise version of Kim Cattrall’s Sophie – whose rocky path to romance, family and happiness is shared by a group of wacky pals, just like the last time. Hopefully this one will stick the landing. March 4

Nightmare Alley

Guillermo del Toro’s sumptuous new adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel – starring Bradley Cooper as Stanton Carlisle, a drifter turned carny who reinvents himself once more as a big-city mentalist, with disastrous results – is another December theatrical release that didn’t get the traction it deserved. But now that it’s up for four Oscars including best picture, maybe people will be more inclined to check it out. And you should: it’s a canny, sinister film built around the best work of Cooper’s career, with a truly delightful supporting turn from Cate Blanchett as a psychotherapist with almost as many secrets as her clients. March 16

Moon Knight

If you only know Marvel’s supernatural detective as a name Patton Oswalt tossed out near the top of his infamous Parks And Recreation filibuster, you may want to sit down: the character has one of the most complex biographies of any comic-book hero. Canonically, he’s a man with multiple personalities – one of whom is a soldier of fortune, another a cabbie, and so forth – all tied to a legendary Egyptian god of justice. In the show, Oscar Isaac is mild-mannered gift shop clerk Stephen Grant, whose inexplicable blackouts and visions of other lives put him on a collision course with destiny… and with Ethan Hawke’s sinister cult leader Arthur Harrow. Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are known for trippy, reality-shuffling work like Spring, The Endless and Synchronic; I’m very curious to see what they do with a Disney budget. Wednesdays from March 30
