TIFF review: Girls Of The Sun

GIRLS OF THE SUN SPEC D: Eva Husson. France. 115 min. Sep 6, 9 pm, Scotiabank 1 Sep 8, 9:15 am, TBLB 2. See listing. Rating: NN

A feminist war movie that fires artistic blanks, Girls Of The Sun takes the real-life heroism of an all-female Kurdish combat unit made up of former ISIS captives and views their dedication and battle success through a superficial, glossy lens.

The many horrific flashbacks lack realism and verge on cliché. An overbearing score and a campfire singalong don’t help. It’s important to see these women taking control of their lives and courageously reclaiming their future, but a documentary might have served them better.
