Here’s everything new that’s coming to Amazon Prime Video Canada in May 2021.
The Underground Railroad
Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins directs this 10-part adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, following a young woman named Cora (newcomer Thuso Mbedu) who flees enslavement on a Georgia plantation – and discovers the “underground railroad” is not a metaphor but a literal railroad to freedom in the North. But escape isn’t as simple as catching a train: a ruthless bounty hunter (Joel Edgerton) is hot on her trail. Chase W. Dillon, Aaron Pierre, William Jackson Harper and Peter Mullan co-star. May 14
P!NK: All I Know So Far
“Fans can join award-winning performer and musician P!NK as she embarks on her record-breaking 2019 Beautiful Trauma world tour and welcomes audiences to join her chosen family while trying to balance being a mom, a wife, a boss and a performer,” promises the press release for this concert documentary from The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey. But now that it’s been more than a year since any of us went to a live music show, a project like this has an extra charge. Play it loud. Sing along. Celebrate the before-times. May 21
Solos
The pitch for Solos is vague, to say the least: created by David Weil and directed by Weil, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Zach Braff and Tiffany Johnson, it’s a seven-part, sci-fi-flavoured anthology series about “what it means to be human.” Uzo Aduba, Nicole Beharie, Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Anthony Mackie, Helen Mirren, Dan Stevens and Constance Wu star in a collection of stories involving (deep breath) “time travel, AI bots, solo trips to the farthest reaches of the universe, scheming smart homes, a mysterious waiting room, near-future fertility treatments and illegal memory transplants.” So, a mostly American Black Mirror? Or a pandemic-safe Tales From The Loop? May 21
Panic
Every year, in a small Texas town, the graduating high-school class competes in a series of challenges to win a big cash prize. This year, something’s different: the challenges are harder, and the stakes are life and death. Lauren Oliver’s YA novel becomes a dramatic series starring Olivia Welch, Mike Faist, Jessica Sula, Cameron Jones and Ray Nicholson. Before I Fall’s Ry Russo-Young and Honeymoon’s Leigh Janiak are among the series directors. Will it be a small-town version of The Wilds or a teen take on The Purge? And how will they get 10 episodes out of this? We’ll find out soon enough. May 28
Wild Mountain Thyme
We’ve all had a pretty rough year, and if you’re looking to blow off steam with something truly ridiculous, maybe consider John Patrick Shanley’s often painfully whimsical adaptation of his stage play Outside Mullingar, with Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan adopting some very broad accents as Irish farmers locked in an endless cycle of courtship: she pursues him, he rebuffs her, she pursues him again, and so on. (Christopher Walken is in there too, with an accent that can only be explained by his dialect coach missing her flight.) There are flashes of charm here and there, especially once Jon Hamm shows up to offer Blunt a more receptive love interest, but just when Shanley seems poised to pull the whole thing together, he brings in a truly preposterous development that blows it all apart. If you’re no longer getting any pleasure from hate-watching the cat movie… well, boyo, Wild Mountain Thyme moight be joost the ting. May 6
