BRUNDLEFLY

BRUNDLEFLY By The Way (Tonic/EMI) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

British Columbia’s Brundlefly makes pretty rock songs that hark back to the mid-90s alt-rock heyday — think Creep-era Radiohead with a little less edge. Frontman Ian Somers’s sweet, smooth Brit-pop-inflected vocals fall somewhere between Damon Albarn and David Usher. The tunes slink along in a radio-friendly sea of shimmery, atmospheric guitars, enhanced by nice details like slide guitar, lovely trumpet parts, slightly quirky lyrics (one song has a cute reference to sipping Perrier) and doo-woppy sing-along backing vocals. Non-threatening pop that goes down easy. Brundlefly play their NXNE showcase at the Rivoli tonight (Thursday, June 6) at midnight as part of the Edge 102 New Rock Search.
