Mayor McCa is Christian Anderson Smith, a Hamilton-based one-man band ready to take over the world. Sure, he listens to more Beatles albums than is healthy, but at least he’s chosen the best Beatle (John – does it really need to be said?) to emulate. Throw a little Primus and a pinch of Beck into the shucking and jiving and you have an album that makes you smile, one of those ear-to-ear jobs. Mixing lilting acoustic love songs (I’m Gonna Write You A Letter/Hold Me) with bizarre vaudevillian ditties (Funky Fresh Beets/A Liddabidda Fun), Mayor McCa has struck a perfect balance between between genius and stupidity. Definitely someone to watch. A Hamilton boy without one song about beer, Tim Hortons or steel? Now that’s an achievement.
