gHoSTFACE KILLAH

Rating: NNNNN

The most flamboyant Wu-Gambino, Dennis Coles, has cooked up something of a masterpiece in Fishscale, down to the album art showing Ghost cutting packs of contraband out of big fishes. The continued brilliance of Tony Starks’s brain-boggling syntax, twisted humour and strange personal idiolect, plus his superb storytelling control, are enough to blow you back on their own. But check the production deets: MF fucking Doom producing a blazing whole Wu-Tang track (with Ol’ Dirty included) — in addition to the handful of other brain-meltingly hot joints the masked man contributes like the sick, sick Underwater. Or how about The Champ, where Just Blaze employs a live studio band with a horn section. And there are legends Pete Rock and Jay-Dee, both just killing it on the five tracks between them. Sure, there’s a Wu-style overabundance of skits, requisite industry/radio drivel, and a recycled Biggie track. Even so, this is Ghostface’s best album.
