After the party it’s the…

Passed Matthew Adam Hart of the Russian Futurists chilling outside Revival on our way to an after-hours spot. I’d received a cryptic Facebook message about the Low Commotion party earlier (with the line “Bring your empty cigarette packages — we’re gonna make a mural when we have enough”) exactly as a friend was suggesting that I check it out. Too much of a coincidence not to go.

I can’t be specific in any way about this basement-based jam, especially after a chat with one patron who strongly advised me not to cover it in this column because it’ll make 5-0 come looking for the place. Hence, I’m not disclosing the location here.

And I understand. But nothing at all illicit went down in this humid, cramped, blue-walled room — just some stylish kids looking to huddle under the psychotropic glow of a lit-up, framed Virgin Mary, Xmas lights and streamers decorating the joint while hot beats played on a laptop in a little makeshift booth. All we did was play Yahtzee and sip ginger ale till 5 am.

So tell Commissioner Gordon he’s got bigger fish to fry.

Pomo Fuck

Stopped by the latest edition of the DMoney event Fuck Faces at Sneaky Dee’s Saturday night. The thing was hard to miss, given the high proportion of the well-dressed and giddy kickin’ it under a cloud of smoke by the door, not to mention pouring every which way down College.

Upstairs, the dance floor was thriving right up to last call, no doubt due to the arsenal of cuts unloaded by selectas Barbi , Cryo , Dougie Boom and Fistfight .

Must give props to the DMoney art/design/marketing department, their eye-catching, ubiquitous trash-celebrity-targeting posters for Fuck Faces going all pomo-self-reference with a generic photo of a woman with bold text over her blank face reading “STUPID FACE HERE.”

It’s a graphic that speaks to how conversant people are with the long-running event.

Fuck Faces is so popular, you can almost understand why they’re still enforcing the $5 cover at 1:30 am, as if their successful night depended on every penny, even though most other indie dance parties don’t see fit to make people pay at that time.

So just know that Fuck Faces charges cover right to the party’s last drop.

FF’s popularity could have been bolstered by its July 20 jam at Sneaky Dee’s, which doubled as the Trevor Coleman Agency launch, with a performance by raunchy rap up-and-comers the Flashboyz .

Trevor’s New Baby

Trevor Coleman , whose booking administration at the Boat saw the nautical Kensington bar’s popularity balloon, has a new spot. We headed to his second party at Baby Dolls (a strip club whose antique-y interior could be cousin to the Boat’s) on Ossington at Dundas. Coleman, who says the event (also called Baby Dolls), DJed by Caff and Sek, wasn’t as busy as its launch the Saturday before due to improper promotion, wants to stress that it’s not what you think.

“It’s not, like, depressed men sitting around,” he says. “It’s a mixed crowd. Girls come, guys come. It’s not a regular strip club, it’s a different kind of thing. It’s kind of the Playboy magazine angle — the girls are surrounded by the best content possible. Put the best DJs in Toronto in the club and people have to go. Playboy was the best magazine in the 60s, and people didn’t feel guilty about reading it — it was for the articles.”

Next Saturday’s (August 18) Baby Dolls night, named Tits And Tail, is being run by promoter Steve Rock with DJs Sushi Mane , New Drella , Vndlsm and Jackie Death .
