A Toronto city councillor wants residents to vote for another provincial government following the Greenbelt scandal.

On Monday, Doug Ford’s government introduced legislation that would return parcels of land back to the Greenbelt if it’s passed. This comes after the government reversed its decision to open the protected lands to developers last month.

Along with the government’s proposal to restore previously removed lands, it will also ensure any future changes can only be made through legislation.

“Any future boundary changes can only be made through a public and transparent process that would require the approval of the legislature,” a government news release issued Monday read.

Following the announcement, Toronto City Councillor  Josh Matlow took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and urged residents to think hard and clear when the time comes to choose the leader of Ontario in the next provincial election, slated for 2026.

“Today, Doug Ford will return lands he gave to his friends, back to the Greenbelt. In the next provincial election, let’s choose a government that will move forward on the housing crisis and protecting the environment, rather than one that needs to backtrack from corruption,” Matlow tweeted on Monday.

Some residents agree with Matlow’s sentiment.

“All that [Doug Ford] accomplished with this corrupt stunt was to further delay affordable housing from being built. Doug Ford exacerbated the housing crisis by looking out for his rich cronies over countless struggling Ontarians,” one user wrote.

“Ontario deserves better,” another user shared.

Meanwhile, others defended Ford and his government.

“At least he can admit a mistake. You’ll never see that from liberals,” one user said.
