From cucumbers to granola bars, here are the food recalls in Canada so far this month

Heads up, shoppers! There are a few food items that have recently been recalled in Canada.

From bagels to apricot kernels, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued several food-related recalls for various reasons so far this month. 

For all the recalled products listed below, the agency advises throwing them away or returning them to where they were purchased. 

If you believe you became sick after consuming recalled products, you should contact your healthcare provider. 

Here’s what you need to know. 

Sareks brand bitter apricot kernels

A recall for Sareks brand bitter apricot kernels that were sold online was issued due to the product containing excessive amounts of amygdalin, which can cause acute cyanide poisoning.

The health agency says that the kernels naturally contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide after being consumed. While the human body can deal with small amounts of cyanide, larger amounts can lead to poisoning, which can be fatal.

Officials say that cyanide poisoning symptoms include weakness and confusion, anxiety, restlessness, headache, nausea, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath, loss of consciousness, seizures and cardiac arrest.

340g Oasis Treasures brand Pistachio Dubai Chocolate 

A recall has been issued for the 340 g package of Oasis Treasures brand Pistachio Dubai Chocolate sold at Showcase stores due to potential salmonella contamination.

The recall applies to products sold online, as well as in stores based in all provinces except Quebec.

The recall warns that food that is contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell bad, but it still has the potential to cause illness. Salmonella can cause serious and potentially fatal illnesses for young kids, elderly people, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems. 

Meanwhile, those who are considered healthy may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, while long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

Manohar bakery products

A recall has been issued for several Manohar brand bakery products sold in Alberta and British Columbia for potentially containing pieces of metal.

It affects several batches of the brand’s 1.5 lbs, 3.5 lbs, and 10 lbs packages of Jeera Cookies, 1.5 lbs, 3.5 lbs, and 10 lbs packages of Ajwain Cookies, and 400g packages of Diet Rusk.

The recall is linked to Sifto brand Hy·Grade Salt which was recalled due to pieces of metal, as the salt was used to make the Manohar products.

Pamela brand cucumbers

Pamela brand cucumbers have been recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

Health Canada says the affected vegetables were sold in Alberta and British Columbia, with the potential for them also being sold in other provinces and territories across the country. 

The agency says the cucumbers are from Mexico and were sold from Oct. 12, 2024, to Nov. 29, 2024. They may have been sold individually or in bulk, with or without a brand name. 

Those who are not sure if they have purchased cucumbers impacted by this recall are advised to contact the store where they purchased their vegetables.

SunFed brand field cucumbers and slicer cucumbers

Another brand, SunFed, is also the subject of a cucumber recall due to potential Salmonella.

This includes SunFed field cucumbers sold from Oct. 12, 2024, to Nov. 29, 2024, as well as SunFed slicer cucumbers that were purchased between Oct. 12, 2024 to Dec. 4, 2024.

The recall impacts cucumbers sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, as well as potentially other Canadian provinces and territories.

Various bagels

Various bagels from different brands sold in Alberta. British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Yukon have been recalled due to being made with the recalled Sifto brand Hy·Grade Salt.

Impacted products include several varieties of bagels from Co-op, BigWay, Super A, and TGP. You can find more information on the specific recalled packages here.

Taylor Farms brand Sweet Kale Chopped Kit 

Taylor Farms brand Sweet Kale Chopped Kit is the subject of another recall due to potential salmonella contamination. 

The recall impacts kits sold in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec.

Golden Swallow (Jin Yan) brand Dongguan Rice Vermicelli 

A recall for the Golden Swallow brand of Dongguan Rice Vermicelli has been issued due to the presence of insects in the product. 

The CFIA says the products were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec.

Choco Max Granola brand Coated Chewy Bars – Chocolate Chip 

A certain type of granola bar has been recalled due to containing undeclared peanuts.The recall was issued on Dec. 2 and impacts the chocolate chip flavour of Choco Max Granola’s brand Coated Chewy Bars that were sold in Ontario and Quebec.
