With youth unemployment at 13.8 per cent, the Government of Canada is rolling out 175,000 jobs and skills-building opportunities — from summer jobs to work placements — to help young Canadians break into the workforce.

According to a Labour Force Survey, youth aged 15 to 24 had an unemployment rate of 13.8 per cent in March 2026.

From securing a job, managing the cost of studying, to gaining meaningful work experience related to their field of study, this change is supposed to help empower Canadian youth with better careers and a more affordable life.

What does this mean?

On April 20, 100,000 Canada Summer Jobs will be posted on the Job Bank website and mobile app.

For post-secondary students, 55,000 new work-integrated opportunities will be added through the Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) and Innovative Work-Integrated Learning (I-WIL) initiative.

More than 20,000 skill-building opportunities and work experiences are also available under the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS.)

“By providing [youth] with affordable education, skills training, and job opportunities, we are helping the younger generation put their best foot forward and feel confident when entering the workforce. Investing in their success will grow our economy and build a more secure future for all,” said The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families in a news release.
