‘Canada lost its ultimate statesman,’ Canadians react to death of former prime minister Brian Mulroney

Canadian politicians are reacting to the death of former prime minister Brian Mulroney.

Mulroney was the 18th prime minister of Canada and died at the age of 84. He died three weeks before his 85th birthday. 

His daughter Caroline, Ontario’s Minister of Francophone Affairs and President of the Treasury Board, posted on X about the news.

“On behalf of my mother and our family, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of my father, The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister. He died peacefully, surrounded by family,” she wrote. 

Caroline said funeral arrangements will be announced once available.

Mulroney leaves behind his wife Mila and four children: former Etalk host Ben, Caroline, Mark and Nicholas. 

Politicians from across the country are reacting to the news. 

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he’s devastated by the news.

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre says he will “always be thankful for his candid advice and generous mentorship.”

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said Mulroney made an “important contribution to Canada.”

Canada’s Senate held a moment of silence for the former prime minister.
