Former Liberal Party leadership candidate Ruby Dhalla is turning heads after criticizing the party on eve of election day, while some Canadians take it as a sign of an endorsement for Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre.
Dhalla made the comments in a post on X on April 27 where she criticized the Liberal Party for disqualifying her from the leadership race in February.
“If you’re a woman, a Canadian from a multicultural community, a young Canadian and/or a hardworking taxpayer just remember what the liberal establishment did to me,” she said.
She then went on to call the leadership race and Carney’s win “rigged” and questioned whether or not Canadians can trust another Liberal government.
“Then make sure you make the right choice for change tomorrow,” she said.
While she did not explicitly say who she would be supporting, Dhalla has reposted tweets and direct messages to her social media accounts where users praised her endorsement for Poilievre.
“I know you’re a force to be reckoned with. Thank you for endorsing Pierre,” one message said, which Dhalla shared on her Instagram stories.
“Former contender for the Liberal leadership race and former Liberal MP, EXTREMELY successful entrepreneur, and someone I have the GREATEST respect for, Ruby Dhalla, JUST ENDORSED PIERRE POILIEVRE!,” another tweet said, which Dhalla also shared.
Canadians have taken to social media reacting to Dhalla’s tweet about the Liberals.
“Well done,” an Instagram user said.
“I’m proud of you for making the tough but right choice! This will get you a lot of credibility with Canadians,” an X user said.
“Glad she spoke up,” another user said.
Meanwhile, some social users expressed that Dhalla’s tweet was not surprising.
“That’s not shocking, she was pretty conservative for a liberal,” one person said.
Other users mentioned they wouldn’t be surprised to see Dhalla run as a Conservative candidate in the future.
The tensions between the former Liberal Member of Parliament and the party began when she was disqualified from the leadership race after the party found she violated 10 of the leadership rules, vote rules, and expense rules.
Since then, Dhalla has repeatedly taken to social media to speak out against the party, even insisting that Carney apologize for a “rigged” leadership race.
The federal election is today, with polls closing at 9:30 p.m.
