Happening NOW: September 29, 2010

What’s happening September 29, 2010:

They definitely weren’t expecting to take down the entire law, but a challenge to Ontario’s prostitution law brought down the whole thing. Ontario Supreme Court Judge Susan Himel said the law endangers women. The effects are immediate, and if an appeal fails (should it be pursued), it will bring down the law across Canada.

But not everyone’s safer. Radioactive waste from 16 decommissioned generators could be crossing the Great Lakes to a processing facility in Sweden. If something goes wrong, expect tens of thousands of years of contamination.

Oh, great news from Shell (and Calgary’s Nexen) – they’ve found tons of deepwater drillable oil in the Gulf of Mexico. Nothing to worry about there, right?

Believe it or not, non-believers (atheists and agnostics) top the list of knowledgeable folks when it comes to facts on religion. They’re followed by Jewish people and Mormons.

Finally, the Tranzac is in trouble. They’re $40,000 in the hole and need to raise it by the end of the year through fundraising concerts, donations and a member drive. There’s a meeting October 4 at 7:30 pm (at the Tranzac) for those who want to help.
