Hillary Clinton’s case for Canada

Hooray for Hillary and maternal health. Earth to Harper, the big bad Bush is gone.

Pretend help for women that denies choice around reproductive rights doesn’t cut it anymore. Expect the coming G8 to serve up more snubs for our PM who is hopelessly out of sync with the rest of the developed world on this on this and other issues.

Harper’s pledge to “lead” the G8 meet that Canada will play host to in June by offering up maternal and infant health as a raison d’etre for the org smacked of cynical electoral calculation from the moment it was uttered. Hmmm. The women’s vote must be won to achieve a majority. An election will likely occur within months of the G8 meeting. What a perfect time for a motherhood issue, something for those bleeding hearts that is at a safe distance, far, far away.

But we women and our problems aren’t a simple story even though those of the male-dominated mindset may want to appeal to us only in our most biologically-determined way – as mothers and potential mothers.

Don’t get me wrong. I truly cherish maternity, but as an operator of a female body, I have news for Stephen Harper: sex and sexuality are also part of the biological package we all receive at birth. And this is often – sometimes too often – connected with those issues of maternal health, he thinks it is so safe and sanitized to promote.

Dear patriarchal politicians, we women are full beings with messy lives complicated by desire, love and our biology. You can’t win us unless you are prepared to woo us responsibly with reproduction rights and safe sex.

That’s why, when it comes to voting Conservative, this is the rare occasion when abstinence really is the only choice.[rssbreak]
