Historic Toronto theatre could be demolished for 76-storey tower

(Courtesy: Mirvish)

Built more than 100 years ago, the Mirvish CAA theatre is slated to be demolished and re-developed into a 76-storey tower in the next few years.

If approved, the new tower will include a community cultural centre along with residential space and more than 600 dwelling units.

KingSett Capital is the private equity real estate investment firm developing the site.

Just south of Bloor Street on Younge Steet, the CAA theatre was originally a private residence but has since become the home of cinema and live theatre.

It was completely rebuilt in 2004 into a 700-seat theatre and concert venue.

The CAA Theatre is the smallest of four Mirvish Productions theatres: the Royal Alexandra, the Princess of Wales, and the CAA Ed Mirvish.

A number of businesses along the Yonge Corridor are slated to be demolished and rebuilt into the tower.
