Ontario reports 1,487 new COVID-19 cases

Ontario reported 1,487 new cases of COVID-19 and a reproduction number of 1.2 on November 16.

The reproduction number refers to the average number of people one person with COVID-19 will infect. Experts say any reproduction rate above one is dangerous, and above two would be catastrophic.

The province saw 1,248 cases on Sunday, a record high of 1,581 cases on Saturday, 1,396 infections on Friday and 1,575 on Thursday.

A high of 508 new cases are being reported in Toronto, 392 in Peel and 170 in York Region.

The province moved several regions to more strict colour-coded stages, effective today. Winsor-Essex, Southwestern, Sudbury & Districts, Middlesex-London and Huron Perth have all been moved to the yellow “protect” level.

Region of Waterloo, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph, Niagara Region, Eastern Ontario, Durham Region and Brant County have been moved to the orange “restrict” level.

York Region, Halton Region, City of Hamilton and Toronto have been moved to the red “control” level.

There have been 10 deaths in the past day, bringing the provincial death toll to 3,371.

With 33,351 tests being completed in the past 24 hours, a dip from Sunday’s count of 42,206, the province’s testing positivity rate is now at 4.5 per cent.

Active cases jumped by almost 500 to 12,830, and hospitalizations have climbed back up to 500 after a dip to 479 on Sunday. There are 125 patients in intensive care and 70 on ventilators.

The seven-day rolling average is now at 1,443.

There are now 107 long-term care homes currently in outbreak, 50 of which have resident cases, according to Minister of Long-term Care Merrilee Fullerton on Twitter. Of the 10 deaths reported on Monday, four were among long-term care residents.

School-aged children ages four to 17 account for 147 of all new cases reported today.

To date, there have been a total of 95,496 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, including 79,295 resolved – up 992 from yesterday.
