Ontario reported 3,328 new cases of COVID-19 on December 31, marking a new record high for the province and the first time daily cases surpassed the 3,000 mark.
The province detected a previous record high of 2,923 new cases on Wednesday, 2,553 on Tuesday and 1,939 on Monday.
The new seven-day rolling average for new cases jumped to 2,436, up from Wednesday’s average of 2,310.
“Locally, there are 888 new cases in Toronto, 431 in Peel, 418 in York Region, 257 in Windsor-Essex County and 194 in Ottawa,” Health Minister Christine Elliott wrote on Twitter.
The death toll on December 31 is 56, the highest daily toll the province has seen since May 9. There have been 252 deaths within the past week.
The province completed 63,858 tests in the past 24 hours, marking a 5.2 per cent positivity rate.
Active cases in Ontario have surpassed 21,000, reaching 21,617 today. There are 1,235 patients currently hospitalized and 337 patients in intensive care, with 210 of those patients on ventilators.
Long-term care residents accounted for 39 of the deaths reported today.
According to Ontario Public Health, one of the recorded deaths was someone between the ages of 20 and 39, and another was someone between the ages of 40 and 59.
To date, Ontario has seen a total of 182,159 COVID-19 cases, including 156,012 resolved – up 2,213 from the day before. 4,530 people have died from the virus.
