Toronto police are warning people of a rise in pickpocketing in the city, as festival season ramps up in the city.
Police say they have received increased reports of cell phones being stolen during public festivals downtown in May and June. They did not say how many phones were stolen during this time period.
Earlier this month, both Do West Fest and Taste of Little Italy were held in the area, bringing thousands of people out to mark the beginning of summer festivities in the city.
Suspects are stealing unattended cell phones from bags, backpacks, pockets, and purses. Officers say that some people even reported having their phones stolen from bags that were zipped closed.

Police are reminding the public to keep their cellphone and valuables close by and stay alert while attending festivals or spending time in public.
The warning comes ahead of several upcoming festivals in Toronto, including this weekend’s Pride Parade and Jazz festivals.

People are urged to make sure their phone and other valuable items are always secured close to their body, but not in their back pocket, where a thief can easily grab them.
