One of Toronto’s most beloved cultural celebrations is marking a major milestone this year.

JerkFest Toronto is celebrating its 25th anniversary by officially proclaiming June 16 as JerkFest Day in the city.

Festival organizers, alongside Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, will mark the occasion during a special ceremony at City Hall on Tuesday evening.

According to organizers, the event will unveil anniversary programming, highlight new festival initiatives and celebrate the history and impact of one of Canada’s premier Caribbean festivals.

“Reaching 25 years is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the support of our community, sponsors, volunteers, artists and festival patrons who have been part of this journey,” Anthony Plummer, executive director of Caribbean Promotions Arts & Culture Inc., producers of JerkFest Toronto, said in a media release.

“The City of Toronto’s proclamation of JerkFest Day is an incredible honour that recognizes not only our history, but also the lasting impact Caribbean culture has had on the social and cultural fabric of this city. We are excited to celebrate this milestone year and share what we have planned for the future.”

The festival returns to Centennial Park in Etobicoke from Aug. 8 to 10, bringing a weekend packed with Caribbean food, music and culture.

Organizers have already announced a lineup featuring dancehall queen Spice, soca superstar Patrice Roberts, dancehall breakout star 450 and reggae favourite Mr. Lexx. One additional headlining performer is still expected to be announced.

Festivalgoers can also look forward to appearances from popular culinary personalities Chef Leon Rowe of Heaven’s Kitchen and Chef Nicole King of Ms. King’s Kitchen.
