Get the shovels ready.

The Greater Toronto Area is under a Winter Storm Warning issued by Environment Canada, predicting lots of heavy and wet snow Friday into Saturday.

Toronto could see as much as 30 cm of snow by Friday night, with strong winds forecasted.

The heaviest snowfall and gustiest winds will continue overnight and winds could easily gust to more than 70 km/h during the storm, according to The Weather Network.

With the temperature expected to be steady near zero, residents should be ready to shovel once the snow ends late Saturday morning.

“Shovelling up to 30 cm of snow is also a chore on its own, but the sheer weight of the snow will increase the challenge of the post-storm cleanup,” The Weather Network website reads. “Pay extra mind to the physical stress of shovelling heavy snow, taking care to stretch beforehand, shovel with safety in mind, and stop for frequent breaks.”

Drivers should be wary of blowing snow, according to the warning.

The Weather Network is urging drivers to avoid travel Friday night with the intense snowfall rates of up to 6 cm per hour.

“The system will produce 20 to 30 cm of heavy, wet snow across much of southern Ontario by Saturday, with gusty winds likely leading to dangerous blizzard conditions at times Friday night,” their website reads.
