Filming in Toronto is hotter than ever as the city was just named the number one destination for filmmakers to live and work. While we may have to wait until summer for Heated Rivalry season two to start production in the GTA, here’s a look at the other movies and series shooting in the city this winter.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
It seems Toronto is the final frontier for Paramount+’s newest Star Trek series. Season one just premiered in January, but season two is already filming through early February at Pinewood Toronto Studios with additional scenes shot on location around the city, including at Trillium Park. The series follows Starfleet Academy’s newest recruits as they learn the ropes of serving the Federation, and face a new enemy that threatens more than just the Academy.
The cast includes Brit Marling, Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard, Zoë Steiner and Holly Hunter. With season one featuring guest stars like Tatiana Maslany, Tig Notaro and Stephen Colbert, expect season two to feature more star-packed supporting roles.
Adults
Streaming on Disney+, FX’s Adults subs Toronto for New York City in season two of the ensemble comedy about a group of twentysomethings figuring out life, love and careers as almost-adults in the big city. Though mostly filmed around East York — season one even featured Northern Mexican spot El Sol on Danforth — production has been spotted near King Street. W. and Spadina Avenue. as filming runs through mid-March. The series stars Malik Elassal, Jack Innanen, Amita Rao, Lucy Freyer and Owen Thiele, all of whom are calling Toronto home temporarily.
Sheriff Country
CBS’ Sheriff Country, starring Deadpool’s Morena Baccarin, picked Mississauga for its production hub and returned to the city for its sophomore season through early February. The show follows Sheriff Mickey Fox as she solves crimes in Edgewater, California — which, if you look closely, is really Milton with some mountains added in post. Mickey’s yellow house might look familiar, too. It’s the same Brampton home used in IT: Welcome to Derry.

Brilliant Minds
Zachary Quinto may have been banned from Manita on Ossington for “bad vibes” while filming season one of Brilliant Minds, but hopefully, he’s on his best behaviour while filming the second season through March. The CBS series follows neurologist Dr. Oliver Wolf and his team of interns as they explore the intricacies of the mind and mental health. The interior hospital space is a Mississauga set, while season one used Toronto streets and Hamilton’s lakeshore and industrial areas to double for New York.

Vought Rising
Prime Video Canada’s The Boys famously made Toronto its production home, so it’s no surprise the prequel Vought Rising is being filmed here, too. With Vought Headquarters located in a digitally-altered Roy Thomson Hall, sharp eyes may spot stars Aya Cash, Cecily Strong, Jensen Ackles, Elizabeth Posey, Mason Dye and KiKi Layne shooting in the city through February. Fans won’t have to wait long for the fifth and final season of The Boys, which will debut in April.

Boston Blue
Toronto’s only Wahlburgers may be closed, but you can still spot Donnie Wahlberg filming his police drama Boston Blue around the city. The Blue Bloods spin-off also stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, Marcus Scribner and Toronto’s own Gloria Reuben. January shoots were spotted in Scarborough, with the Annex subbing in for Boston’s Beacon Hill neighbourhood and the Royal Canadian Legion on Coxwell Avenue standing in for the Boston Police Station.
North of North
CBC Gem’s and APTN’s comedy about a young Inuk woman reinventing herself may be set in a small Arctic community, but season two filming starts right in Toronto at Netflix’s studios. January weather might make you feel like you’re in Canada’s North, but Toronto just can’t match Iqaluit’s landscape, so production will head to Nunavut for filming later in the season. Anna Lambe returns alongside Mary Lynn Rajskub, Braeden Clarke, Maika Harper, Jay Ryan, Zorga Qaunaq, Bailey Poching, Nutaaq Doreen Simmonds and Keira Cooper.
