Opening COC’s spring season is Wozzeck, by Alban Berg, running from April 25 to May 16. The performance combines opera with art installation, using a spectacular fusion of film, animation, and puppetry to tell this dark and dramatic story that dives into the impacts of post-war trauma.
Perfect for those who love exploring new music and immersive performances, the story quickly descends into murder, madness, and self-destruction after the title soldier, Wozzeck, discovers his lover, Marie, has given in to the charms of the Drum Major.
The second spring offering is Eugene Onegin, by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, a globally beloved masterpiece returning to the stage after it was last featured in 2018.
In one of opera’s most iconic stories, Onegin is a worldly young aristocrat who rejects Tatyana, a naive young woman from the countryside, after she boldly expresses her feelings in an emotional letter. But time proves to be the great equalizer as the two reunite many years later, only to find that the tables have turned – and Onegin has much to regret.
While the set design is known for its striking minimalism, the characters of Eugene Onegin are dressed in lavish costumes, including beautiful, full gowns that reflect the fashion of the 1860s. It certainly doesn’t make it easy to swap outfits, but the COC Costume Shop has created some ingenious ways for the performers to jump from scene to scene seamlessly.
For those attending the opera, remember that there’s no dress code at the COC! Whether you’re rocking your comfiest jeans and hoodie or dressing up to the nines, the COC welcomes everyone to enjoy the opera in whatever you want to wear.
The COC also offers additional accessibility features like SURTITLES™ – English subtitles projected above the stage throughout the performances – so you won’t miss a single moment of the action. SURTITLES™ were actually invented by the COC in 1983 and have since become a staple in opera houses worldwide.
