Diljit Dosanjh is set to perform a sold-out show at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on May 31. The Punjabi artist has been making waves with South Asian fans for years, but for some people, this is the first time they’re hearing about him. Here’s what to know about the Indian-American singer and rapper who’s taking over the world.
The 42-year-old is a Punjabi singer, film producer and actor, appearing in dozens of Punjabi and Bollywood movies.
From the Met Gala to The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Dosanjh has been making appearances on a big scale across North America, including for his Aura World Tour.
Dosanjh’s impact
Dosanjh just closed out two sold-out shows on Monday at New York City’s massive Madison Square Garden arena, which has a capacity of about 19,500 people.
But he’s performed for bigger crowds.
Dosanjh kicked off his tour by performing at BC Place in Vancouver on Apr. 28, which packed the venue with 55,000 fans. It’s something he also achieved during his last tour in Apr. 2024, recorded as the largest ever Punjabi music performance outside of India, according to Billboard Canada.
Ahead of the show, Dosanjh shared what playing for the city meant to him on his Instagram, sharing how Punjabis were denied entry into the country via the Komagata Maru Ship just two kilometres from the arena’s location in 1914.
Now, thousands of Punjabi fans gather to watch the superstar in that same city.
“How much time Punjabis have put for their identity and for their character as well,” Dosanjh said. “I didn’t do anything, I was just reflecting.”
Despite his humbleness, Dosanjh is a major Punjabi figure to the South Asian community, consistently bringing together thousands of fans for his music.
U.S. Talk show appearance
Just recently Dosanjh returned as a guest to The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, an appearance that gained traction on social media, as the artist taught Fallon how to Bhangra dance, which was later posted online.
Dosanjh also performed one of his newest songs, titled “Morni.” The video gained over 34.5 million views, bringing it centre stage and to people who don’t tend to be the artist’s target demographic.
Many TikTok users responded, from comments along the lines of not being able to understand the language but vibing to Dosanjh’s music anyway, to saying how cool he is.
“I’ve heard enough to give him the next Super Bowl halftime show,” one TikTok user wrote.
“Do people realise you don’t need to understand the lyrics to enjoy the music and performances? If you have an ounce of musicality you can vibe to all music,” another TikTok user wrote.
The appearance by Dosanjh is one fans praised.
“I don’t think people know how MONUMENTAL this is. A Punjabi musician on a mainstream late night talk show.. in this political climate. Amazing, wonderful, spectacular,” a TikTok user said.
Met Gala appearance
Dosanjh also came dressed to the nines at the 2025 Met Gala, adorned with golden accents, a sword, and sporting a “sherwani,” a long, traditional garment worn typically by South Asian men.
His appearance prompted big reactions from social media.
“Tell me why I had to see the same black suit over and over but they cut this MASTERPIECE on live,” one TikTok user wrote.
Many others shared the same sentiment, talking about how well dressed the artist was at the biggest fashion event of the year.
“This. This is how you enter the Met Gala,” a TikTok user said.
“I don’t know who this is but he looks incredible,” another TikTok user said.
As Dosanjh continues to turn heads, he’s expected to perform at the Rogers Centre to a sold out crowd on Sunday.
