Six from the 6ix: Dilly Dally, Alice Glass, Peaches, Slim Twig, ShaqIsDope and Memphis

Dilly Dally, Desire

Imagine the love child of Courtney Love and Billy Corgan – wait, no. Actually, do NOT imagine that. What a horrible, horrible thought. Instead, just listen to the catchy new single by Toronto band Dilly Dally, whose debut album, Sore, arrives via Buzz Records on October 9. This single might take you back to that moment when grunge went “pop.”

Alice Glass, Stillbirth

Alice Glass has come out on the other side of Crystal Castles’ acrimonious split with a solo single co-written and produced with Jupiter Keyes of HEALTH. Stillbirth is about Glass reclaiming her self-worth after exiting an abusive relationship, a subject underscored by the song’s alternations between violent upheaval and moments of calm. She’s donating all proceeds from digital sales of the song to organizations that help survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence and incest. Visit her website for details on how to donate and to read Glass’s full statement about the inspiration behind Stillbirth.

Peaches, Bodyline featuring Nick Zinner

It’s a good time to be a Peaches fan. After spending several years working on musical theatre, DJ, film and opera projects, the Toronto expat has cut her first album, Rub, in six years. She also just released a photo book and this one-off collaborative single with Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner for Adult Swim’s singles series. The level of riffage on Bodyline is a lot different than the minimal, beat-oriented Rub (which comes out in September), and suggests a full-blown foray into metal might be something Peaches could add to her ever-expanding repertoire at some point down the line.

Slim Twig, Slippin’ Slidin’

Art rock hero about town Slim Twig is preparing to release his fifth album, Thank You For Stickin’ With Slim Twig, via DFA Records on August 7. The sexed-up opener/lead single is described in a press release as a “cock rock analogue to Kanye West’s similarly phallic On Sight,” while its accompanying video reminds us of the S&M dynamic inherent in pet ownership.

ShaqIsDope, My Time

ShaqIsDope gets sing-songy on the third single from his forthcoming Black Frames album, due out this year. The song is a collaboration with DJ/producer Pitt tha Kidd, who creates an appropriately day-dreamy soundscape for the Toronto rapper’s introspective rhymes about making it big.

Memphis, Faith

Like a classic Janet Jackson album, this edition of Six From The 6ix gradually winds down into chill-out ballad territory with the latest from Memphis, aka Stars frontman Torquil Campbell and North Carolina musician Chris Dumont. According to Campbell, the song is about “how sad life is.” The pair haven’t released an album since 2011’s Here Comes A City and have yet to confirm whether or not Faith is a teaser of things to come.
