Road closures and TTC disruptions caused by a garbage truck downing power lines around King Street and Spadina Avenue could take until the end of the week to be resolved.

The collision happened on Tuesday morning, where a garbage truck bin struck streetcar overhead infrastructure southbound on Spadina Avenue just south of King Street. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) described the damage to the wires as “significant.”

The intersection will remain closed, the TTC says, as crews are on the scene around the clock to assess the damage and complete repairs to the wires and poles.

“We will need to close the intersection in order to carry out this work as safely, quickly, and thoroughly as possible,” TTC Senior Communications Specialist Stuart Green said to Now Toronto on Tuesday.

Other areas affected by the road closures are Spadina Avenue between Front and Adelaide streets and King Street between Charlotte and Brant streets.

“Once the repairs are done, we will need to test and commission the area to ensure it’s safe for service. This is an extensive repair that we estimate could take until the end of the week to complete,” Green added.

However, Green says the TTC will work to shorten the timeline if possible.

Streetcar service has been impacted, and diversions have been placed along multiple routes, including:

504 King/508 Lake Shore:

  • Westbound on King, north on York St. to Queen St. west to Shaw St. south to King St.
  • Eastbound on King to Shaw St., east on Queen St., south on Spadina Ave. to Adelaide St., eastbound on Adelaide to Charlotte, south to King St.

510 Spadina buses:

  • Diverting via Front St., Bathurst St. and Queen St. both ways.

The TTC advises those in the impacted area west of Spadina Avenue to use Queen or Bathurst streets to access service. Using Queen St. is also recommended for people heading east of Spadina Ave. as well.

Wheel-Trans customers in areas without direct access to service can also request door-to-door service as needed, the TTC said.
